Reply To: What are the differences in these papers?

the Wenzhou papers and Japanese papers are from mulberry tree bark rather than the Qing Tan used in Xuan paper. The Song papers are a special blend and each one is different.

Plus is normally the 138 x 170cm size of paper which is nearly twice the size of the standard 100 x 50xm, see the paper size chart and explanation here:

the actual sizes are specified on the product descriptions:

What are the differences in these papers?

Hi

I was wondering what the difference is between ‘Inkston 0809 Plus Xuan Paper’ and the ‘Inkston 0809 Xuan Paper’? I’ve noticed that there are a couple of papers with the same name difference but what makes it different? The percentage of tree used to make the paper?

My other question: what makes Song and Wenzhou paper so significant? The color, ingredients, absorption, … ?

Thanks in advance

How to use “Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden”

Hello,

If you wonder how to paint the Chinese way, you’ll probably encounter the name “Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden” which is like THE guide to help you paint in Chinese style.
Only when looking into the copy its mostly drawing, contouring the objects than really paint (like painting a flower but with colour and full pressure of your brush).  How do you analyse/read this manual to have a productive result?

Do any of you used it already and want to share some experiences? Thank you

Buren bij Kunstenaars (Belgian event) – Chinese calligraphy Bruges

This is a Belgian event happening in the weekend of 18 untill 19 Octobre. Not only Asian art but any kind of art you can find in different places all around Flanders. From professional art ateliers to people making artisanal crafts in their home ‘atelier’.

Reason I post this is because as an open atelier in Bruges we open our doors as well for Chinese calligraphy to see and do yourself. Be sure to take a look and I will welcome you and explain what our students have been up to. Have a look at our Facebook page as well where we post every week what we have been writing or discussing. In the future there will be more informational evenings around calligraphy so if you’re interested, be sure to give it a like and/or follow to keep updated!

If you want more information you can ask anytime ! Happy to help 🙂

Missing Item/s

Dear Inkston,

I placed an order on the 20 Aug for 6 items. The package arrived on the 28th August. One item was not exactly what I ordered but I have overlooked this.

The issue I am writing about today is that five items came except the ‘Ceramic Water Resevoir for Rinsing Brushes’ priced at £40.37

I have written twice already in private requesting information on this matter, once on the 28th August immediately after I noticed the item was missing, and again on the 2nd September.

I suspect that given the item is handmade in Jingdezhen there may be a neccessary delay, whereas the stock items can be shipped immediately, but I have not heard back from Inkston to confirm whether this is true or not. I am disappointed in that I have received no response to my previous correspondence in private given a reasonable period of time. I hope that by writing on this public forum, I will finally get a response from Inkston.

Yours sincerely,

Josh Chu

Li Shu Brushes?

I bought an Inkston 0100Wl 小鶴颈 XiaoHeJing “Small Crane Neck”  羊毫 Yang Hao Wool brush some time ago and use it for Li style calligraphy. It is excellent and works really well especially with the “silkworm head and goose tail” type of strokes.

The brush is listed as a medium size. Is there another brush you could recommend that is larger but with same characteristics?

Thanks! #LiCalligraphy;Brushes

Picking Chinese name

Hi All,

Since I am a westerner and I study Chinese, I am currently undergoing the hard task of choosing a Chinese name for myself. The last thing I want to do is to simply translate my Italian name in Chinese… instead, I want to pick up a name that really sounds Chinese. My passion for Cinese culture led me to buy an old book that aims at leading the reader to choose an auspicious Chinese name based on zodiac, yin/yang, binomials etc. After some study and attempts, I came up to what sounds to me like a fair name, but I would really like to hear from any Chinese native speaker or experts among you if, to your ears, this sounds like a good name for a male.

So, here we go: the surname is 波 (Bo1), given name 傲蟀 (Ao4 Shuai4) – I  really liked the idea of having both a character that reminds of the cricket, with its fighting spirit and good fortune meaning, and a character that conveys the meaning of being proud.

Does this sound like a nice/good/fair name to you?

I really appreciate any feedback you may give me.

Thank you!

Reply To: Calligraphy style for beginners

Bonjour ema.ballo,

#BeginnerCalligrapher #ChuSuiliang #RegularStyle #Resources

For technique and basic skills this chap on youtube has lots of videos – the link below has basic strokes and leads to more videos in the same series. He has recently posted some different styles (clerical etc) and videos where he copies famous texts, but there are loads of kai shu videos;

This chap below (田英章 Tian Ying Zhang) is quite famous and his calligraphy is very clear and standard. I watch a lot of his videos for the technique and the execution – a practice session always seems to be better after watching him!;

Reply To: Inksticks for Indentify

All these are produced by 徳记胡开文 Deji Hukaiwen factory. Personally, I’ve never used their ink, but as far as I know their reputation is not very good.

The first one is called “唐墨” (Tang Mo), an oil soot ink (it says 书画油烟墨, “calligraphy and painting oil soot ink”, on the box). Many factories make some version of the “唐墨” mold and it is usually a middle-grade oil soot ink, but the exact recipe varies from one factory to another. 纯松烟 is literally pure pine soot.

For historical reasons, there are many factories with Hukaiwen in their name. Talking about new ink, 屯溪胡开文 Tunxi Hukaiwen (registered trademark 胡开文 Hukaiwen) and 绩溪胡开文 Jixi Hukaiwen (registered trademark 苍佩室 Cang Pei Shi) are generally considered good, 歙县老胡开文 She County Old Hukaiwen (registered trademark 李廷珪 Li Tinggui) is supplied at Inkston. Tunxi and She County Old Hukaiwen were two of the state-owned ink factories in the last century. #Inkstick

Very interesting! I especially liked the video about the production of  ‘Chinese Colour’. I’d love to know more about the production process of colour chips. Since I make some of the coloured pigments I use myself, I’d really like to know more about the traditional process of pigment and colour chip preparation as it is done in China. If anyone has any further information on that topic I would be grateful to hear it. #KamagraBrisbaneMatEmbaloChinesevideos

BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING INK STICKS.

<p style=”text-align: center;”>BUYING INK STICKS.</p>
This is just a heads up (warning) to those who may be new to the Chinese Arts.

Buying your ink sticks.

Be careful when looking on places like ebay.
Some pointers are as follows (but are not set in concrete BUT will help you stay out of trouble until experience kicks in)
1. Make sure it has a box.
2. How much is it? Very expensive?
3. What does it look like.

OK so 1. If it doesnt have a box probably it was a cheapie and someone has doctored it to look like something ancient.
Expensive ink sticks lose value unless you can actually use them in the shop if they dont have an elaborate wooden box.
$750 ink sticks dont come in celophane “off the peg” wrapping.

2. Is it really expensive…. ? Then read about it and ask yourself why is it so expensive.  Normally it should have a recipe name or type title like “Tang Mo” or similar. if the seller hasn’t added information you feel warrants the sticks purchase….. dont buy it.
If you suspect something…… be cautious and trust your instincts.

3. If it looks like aged wood or has been made to look “antique” or old…. forget it.  Soot never ages visually like that. It should look as good as it did when it came out of the mold.

Study the image here below.
The edges are really cracked and chipped BUT there are no impacts on the face!!!

There looks like what appears to be white Flour on the surface. Or something pale and white oddly as if to make it look faded and old. It isnt dust as that is all colours.

And if this “faded” effect is supposed to be real are we trying to say soot ink fades to white when its old!!!!!!!!!!????????????
Lets not be stupid.
Keep looking.

The edges are chipped away where, across the years, tiny impacts have taken place but there are NONE on the flat faces OR in the indented seal mark lower down. That is pristine without marks or damage.

has the seller list graded the ink stick?
That is, is it 101, 102 or 103.
103 is student grade.
102 is intermediate accomplished calligrapher grade.
101 is top notch and if you can afford it….. what you need.

For me, no grading?
No buy!

So would you say this ink stick below was on sale for $117?
Or $32.

It is $32.
But even then remember there are soot ink sticks on sale everywhere for $2 which are 70% glue.
Useless if you are serious about calligraphy.
It wouldn’t be difficult to “age damage” them.

Ask the seller what happened to the box. Generally a box is ALWAYS with the ink stick. Odd for it not to be. People treasure ink sticks especially if they’ve paid high prices for high quality.
Always look and think.
Make sure your supplier has a reputation of quality.
Everything will fall into place after that.

Fake Ink Stick

These ink sticks are ancient, pristine and were expensive and as a result make stunningly easy pitch black ink.
They are mine.  They are old but look like they were made yesterday.

I have also been victim to buying “ink stick sets” 14 in an ornate box only to find they are glue ornaments. £150 down the drain.
We all learn our lessons.

What’s the best way to store inksticks for aging?

Recently, I bought my first higher quality inksticks and since they are so wonderful to use, I immediately decided that it would be a wise decision to build for the future and stash some extra inksticks away for aging. As a relative novice to Chinese painting I am not sure about the best way to store them, though.

I know the basics: to keep them in their wooden box and to store them in a dry and shaded place. But how about the plastic wrapper that encloses the inkstick inside the box. Should that be left on or taken off? And do inksticks benefit from an annual airing, like paper does? Also, I read that inksticks are finished with a thin protective layer of glue, so would it be harmful to try them out before long-term storage, as it would remove that layer from one end?

I would be grateful to anyone who could offer more information on the subject.

Reply To: How often should I replace my brush?

The state of your brushes depends a lot on how you treat them. For example, I never let my brushes dry after only rinsing them with tap water. When they are cleaned, I rinse them quickly with demineralized water to prevent the limestone from hardening them by drying. How to smooth the hair before drying is also essential. And, of course, they have to dry the tip down.
When I started teaching, I noticed that some of my students’ brushes died after a few days, while some of my students were over 30 years old and looked almost new. Since then, I try to teach them how to correctly treat their material …
But especially, the brush ages badly if the ink is bad, the ink stone too rough and especially if the movements of the brush lack of fluidity and constantly grip the paper. When one has to “slightly” torture the brush to obtain certain effects (rocks, tree bark, etc.), it is better to use old brushes (either “bad brushes” or, preferably, good brushes that are degraded over time).
All this reminds me of Prince Wen’s cook, of whom Zhuangzi speaks.

You can read a translation here:
http://www.bopsecrets.org/gateway/passages/chuang-tzu.htm

Reply To: top oil inksticks

For calligraphy, you need dark black and fluidity (not too sticky ink). The both inks Li Ting Gui and Royal ink are correct. I often use also japanese inkstick that are excellent but much more expansive. This is for oil soot ink. But if you want to copy ancient calligraphy masters on a “looking old” paper, I advice you to use a good pine soot ink, in order to get deeper dark  instead of too glossy strokes, particularly if you practice xiaokai on a shuxuan paper, because when the ink does not penetrate the paper and dry on the surface, it becomes more brillant.

Reply To: Paper for Sumi-e beginner

Bonjour.

Reply To: Paper for Sumi-e beginner

Hello. To have a precise answer, you need to formulate your question differently. Indeed, what distinguishes the papers, it is not that they are made for “beginner” or for “expert”. It takes a hammer to plant a nail and a screwdriver to drive a screw (and not the opposite), no matter whether one is professional or amateur!

Sumi-e is the Japanese name for a school of painting originally from China dominating at the time of Muromachi (between 1336 and 1573), which is technically characterized by black ink washes and is philosophically close to Zen Buddhism.
As a result, in terms of material and media, it is identical to what is used in Chinese “xieyi” (spontaneous expression) painting, so you have to give preference to “raw” or “partially” papers. raw / partially cooked “, ie more or less absorbent papers, this is the first point.

But what will determine more precisely your choice, and which explains the multitude of papers available, are other criteria, which you do not mention:
1. What are you combing? Small flowers (orchids), large flowers (peonies), bamboo, birds, landscapes?
2. Do you leave the white background, painting the main subject in one sitting, or do you make successive washings (clouds, mists, background atmosphere) that require to wet the paper several times?
3. What is the format of your works? 20 X 30 cm or rather 70 X 100 cm?
4. Do you make copies of old works that ask for “aged” papers or not?
5. Are these exercises that you will throw or keep in a drawer or works that you intend to mount on roll or frame and that you hope for several centuries of longevity?

Depending on your answers to each of these questions, it is possible to guide you to the best paper. #SumiE

His architecture always aimed to be timeless.  As well as his famous modern pieces such as his pyramid at the Louvre he also designed pieces connecting the past and present such as the Suzhou museum, picture from ArtNews:

Eventually, all the styles you mention are good to practice and the noted calligraphers of history all have something to offer. I would say to continue to practice those you seem to have an affinity for; eventually you will also try others. My teacher has me work constantly on kaishou “standard” styles he gives me models for. But I also do standard from others. It is all good. In addition, be sure to work on various sizes, from very small to single character with large brush. Such a challenge! Reply To: Calligraphy style for beginners

Hello ema.ballo

For beginners it is usually recommended to copy styles from Yan Zhenqing or Liu Gongquan or Ouyang Xun or Zhao Mengfu. Simply because these were the greatest four calligraphers in the regular script. By mastering one of their styles you will master everything you need to know of the regular style (kaishu).

I am not that familiar with the calligrapher Chu Suiliang, I looked up his calligraphy and it’s not that bad. Although there are some typical techniques just for his style. If you want to copy and learn these , by all means go ahead.

In China they tend to recommend you to learn a style from a calligrapher even though you do not feel ‘connected’ with this style. I personally think that you should have some kind of ‘connection’ with the style you do that way your learning curve will be better because you have a better motivation 🙂

It also depends on the learning material/resources you have, like books etc. Hope this helped you a bit #BeginnerCalligrapher #ChuSuiliang #RegularStyle #Resources

Calligraphy style for beginners

Hi All, I would like to ask you a question about calligraphy styles. I am a more or less a beginner who has learnt the little he knows so far from books and video sources, not having the time to regularly attend calligraphy courses (too sad…). Nonetheless, I practice over and over again as soon as I have the chance to. Often I happen to read about the importance for beginners to practice the styles of Yan Zhenqing or Liu Gongquan because of the proportions and harmony of composition they are able to teach you. What do you think about this? To be honest, I have tried to copy the style of Chu Suiliang and I definitely have the impression of being by far more apt to it, since I usually get very disappointed with my attempts at Yan or Liu styles…

Any tips/ideas/suggestions?

Thank you!!

Top Grade Professional Cinnabar Red Seal Paste 50g

Product Link: https://www.inkston.com/shop/inks/seal-paste/top-cinnabar-red-seal-paste-50g/

Brand
Jiang SiXu Workshop is the most prestigious natural mineral colour workshop in China, and a China “Time-Honoured Brand” providing the highest grade Chinese natural mineral colours for professionals for over 350 years.
Materials

Cinnabar or Vermillion is the naturally occurring mineral mercury sulphide (HgS). Inorganic mercury such as the mercury found in cinnabar is the least toxic form of mercury and has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, ancient Roman makeup, Hindu Bindi forehead marking and Sindoor hair marking but should still be considered toxic and handled with care, especially in powder form.  The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention states:
Inorganic Mercury: When eaten in large amounts, some inorganic mercury compounds can be very irritating and corrosive to the digestive system. If repeatedly eaten or applied to the skin over long period of time, some inorganic mercury compounds can cause effects similar to what is seen with long term mercury vapor exposure, including neurological disturbances, memory problems, skin rash, and kidney abnormalities.
There is uncertainty about how poisonous cinnabar is and about the amount required to produce dangerous effects. Scientists generally recommend that we limit our exposure to all mercury compounds, however, including inorganic mercury.
People using cinnabar are warned not to inhale cinnabar dust and to be very careful when breaking the mineral in case dust is created. The mineral mustn’t be ingested or licked. In addition, it mustn’t be heated, which might trigger mercury vapor release. Opinions are divided about whether cinnabar is safe to touch. Mercury (ll) sulfide can be absorbed through the skin, but how much is actually absorbed from a lump of cinnabar mineral is unknown. Since there are unanswered questions about the mineral’s safety, it’s best to wear gloves when handling it.

Practice Blank Painting Mat

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

This is a very helpful tool for you to practice Chinese painting strokes. The mat is made with fine silk, natural wood, and fine special material. The special practice layer is mounted in a silk roll.

How it works?

Use clean water to paint with brush. Once the mat is dry, the painting you did will disappear and you can reuse the mat again.

You can see more details in this video clip on inkston youtube channel:
