Reason behind owning a lot of seals
Hello, I was wondering why calligraphers and/or painters have a lot of seals. You would think that a seal is like the artist signing its work but if an artist has so many seals, how can an outstander know who the author is? Western artists normally put their signature on their work and its always the same one so you can recognize who’s work it is.
I know that every seal has another meaning and the reason why using other seals on your works is probably because it’s more fitting to the work itself. Just don’t know if this is a correct way of thinking. So I would like to know your thoughts or the reason behind owning/making many seals?
Thanks! #MeaningBehindSeals #Seals #Signature

Reply To: how to flatten wrinkles on Xuan paper before painting?
It is normal for the painting to wrinkle. This is why you need to mount your painting. You do not need to frame it finely with silk but you need to mount it with natural glue. Once it is mounted, the painting is flat automatically. Some people use silicon and iron, we do not recommend this because it doesn’t last long and it will harm the painting later. We recommend you to make glue and use it to mount it. see this article:

Is it possible to flatten the paper after painting or doing calligraphy? When it dries up it starts to wrinkle again but how do you get it flat? #Wrinkles #XuanPaper

Reply To: 2019 Year of the Pig Competition – Amateur
I drew a piggy, sitting in the mud next to some young trees.
I only used black ink and water to get some difference in shades. For the mud it really came out nice I think. I washed the brush but not thoroughly and then dipped the tip a bit back into the sumi-ink. Then used the side of my brush with some quick movements. For the little leaves I twisted my smallest brush (same one using for drawing the tree) after cleaning it a bit and did some quick dips on the paper. Used the same brush full with ink and twisted to paint the grass. I used 3 different brushes. #ChinesePaintingOfPig

I guess traditionally pigs and peonies don’t really go together in chinese painting? My LaoZhi certainly thought it was weird! But in my mind since I think in English, it rhymed and sounded good together! ;0) So I painted this because peonies are my favourite flowers to paint and pigs are the theme. I wanted to depict a family with the children trusting and following their parent, looking into the future of 2019, wherever the road takes them but towards happiness and prosperity. Kind regards, Connie Lam.

Halo, my name is Yudhi. I paint this: “Enjoying The Spring”, using spontaneous Xie Yi technique, Chinese Ink and Maries chinese watercolor on Xuan Rice Paper 24×34 cm.
I paint this because Pig is related to Relax and Life enjoyment. Spring is such a right moment to behold the beauty of the new beginning, while the nature is starting to bloom again after freezing winter.

The traditional oil to use is castor oil, try just a couple of drops and let it absorb before stirring as described above using bone or plastic spatula. The reason not to use metal is if the paste is made with genuine cinnabar (sulphide of mercury) it will dissolve a little of the other metal in time, cheaper pastes, such as those that come in tins, are now made with synthetic pigment. #SealPaste

Folklore has it that seal paste does not like metal; I ignore the scientific reason behind this, if there’s one. Bone, ceramic, or wooden tools can be used all right.
Your friend’s seal paste indeed looks quite dry. It’s hard to say from the photo if it is still usable, but she can try it. To take better care of seal paste in the future, note that it’s not just a stamp pad. To begin with, it should be stirred every few months. The method of stirring is to roll the paste into a ball. When applying it on the seal, tap the seal gently on the surface of the ball. I looked up a couple of videos for you (not mine):
Stirring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtEh8U2HmSQ
Applying on a seal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yA_wNKHG5w
You can find more by searching for “攪拌印泥”. To store seal paste, I suggest wrapping the entire porcelain box in cling film. #SealPaste

Why.
I have painted a New Year picture every year for the last six years chiefly to use as a greeting to friends. This year I have made the pig a wild one at sunrise. The wild boar is an important symbol in the ancient Celtic cultures as it is in Chinese culture. Coincidentally the wild pig is also associated with the old Celtic lunar New Year ‘Samhain’ which falls in autumn. (Nowadays people mostly celebrate it on the last night of October to first day of November as it survives as Halloween and we have forgotten how to work out our lunar calendar.)
Technique
In ink (five lacquer ink and pine ink), cinnabar ink, and colour on xuan paper. As well as using Chinese brushes I made much use of a Chinese style brush of soft pheasant feathers I had just made myself. The seals are ones cut by myself in petrified wood.
