Hi riekjecares, after consulting a couple of mounting masters in China, here we got the reply: there is no specific requirement on which side. However, it is quite common to use the smooth side out while keep the rough side in for the painting heart.
I am not sure the reason behind this practice. I have checked some mounted paintings and found the smooth side seems to be on top always.

In this article, we have also cited the video clip from the British Museum. It is a very good example of mounting. We do not recommend silicon paper at all because this silicon layer makes it impossible to maintain and repair the painting.
We would recommend you to learn how to make natural glue with flour. You can find some discussions on this topic in the forum. These discussions have provided very good tips on how to make flour, what is the alum powder for glue, where to find alum powder, etc.

New exhibition of modern Chinese ink masters “Intimate Encounter” at the newly-opened Guardian Art Center in Beijing features 50 works from the M K Lau Collection, by 19 modern ink masters including Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Pu Ru (1896-1963), Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) and Lu Yanshao (1909-93).
Includes nine pieces by Pu Ru – a cousin of Pu Yi, the last emperor. One of these “Lofty Landscape” is about 11 meters long, with high quality of brushwork across a variety of different painting styles over the entire scroll. Another is by both Pu Ru and Zhang Daqian
known as “Pu in the north of China and Zhang in the south”. In a mark of friendship, each artist painted a separate half of the work. This type of cooperation on a single scroll is common among ink painters.

I read in your other threads in this forum. You mentioned that some Chinese artists use acrylic paints to paint on Xuan paper. I have only been using special Chinese paints and natural pigments to paint on Xuan paper. How do acrylic paints perform with these Chinese traditional materials? I am very curious to know because I want to see if there is any more possibilities for me to create arts. Thanks!
