Reply To: seal carving
You are right on mirroring the characters when you put them on your stone, so when you stamp your seal it will look right. You can use a pencil or a felt pen to draw the characters on it (traditionally they use ink and brush).
I’ve made a video once on how to carve a seal if it may be of help for you : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MeeH21SW-s #SealCarving

Hi Catherine,
its not really a matter of making it a priority, it depends on how much you want it (i think). Forcing yourself into practising while you are not feeling the ‘vibe’ isn’t going to work out so well as perhaps first thought.
Practising Chinese calligraphy or painting for me is a matter of how I feel. If i don’t feel inspired than it happens that I don’t write for days. But when I do write or paint, I could lose track of time which is a wonderful feeling.
Just listen to yourself. If you feel a sadness because you haven’t practised yet, then plan a moment ahead and say “i will practice for one hour” and then simply do it. Remember this is a time for you, a time to explore yourself in an artistic way. Perhaps you can ask someone to join you.
Hope this helped a bit 🙂

For Chinese brushes, once used you should not put the cap back on. The plastic cap is only there when you buy it to protect the brush. After using it, its indeed better to hang the brush (the water wont drip out if you gently wipe it with the towel).
If you should put the cap back on, then you could damage some of the hairs on your brush. Some may look funky then #DryBrushHair

Reply To: How should I clean brushes?
The general rules of thumb are as follows:
- Ensure you put the cap back on immediately after use, this is applicable even if you’re just temporarily switching colors
- Store your brush pens horizontally to ensure the ink doesn’t congregate at the bottom of the pens
To clean your water brush pen, simply squeeze the water through the chamber until it reaches the brush tip, then wipe it gently on a towel or paper towel. Repeat this step into your brush tip is entirely clean. #DryBrushHair

I recommend you Duke Asian fountain pen. I got this today and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality, fit, and finish given the pen’s price. The engraving on the cap and the details are fantastic. It’s absolutely beautiful! I loaded it up with Sailor black pigment ink and it writes very well. It’s so easy to vary the width of your lines because of the fude nib. Writing looks very nice and formal. #CalligraphyInkstick

mounting Hobotai silk to paper
Does anyone have experience with mounting Hobotai silk to paper? I will be mounting several monotype prints on silk to paper for an artist. The monotype printing is done with acrylic and soy-based inks (non-water soluble) and the application is thick- completely absorbed through the silk from the front to the back. My instinct would be to use starch paste but my concern is that the paste will not stick to the non-absorbent ink areas. I have used Rhoplex-N580 adhesive successfully mounting thin papers to heavier sheets (chine collé). But I worry that the silk may be too sheer, allowing the Rhoplex to bleed through to the front surface. Any suggestions would be helpful.
My aim is to get the silk mounted flat and smoothly to a western printmaking paper such as Rives BFK for stability and display purposes.

Hello, greetings from the UK. I inherited this fan and have been trying to learn more about the fan, the signature, age and full translation of the kanji. I believe the fan is Chinese and likely to be over 50 years old. A Japanese friend thought it includes 雪→snow 雨→rain 江→mouth of river 澪→waterways n the calligraphy, but I would love to know more. Kindest regards

looking for a very dark black pine soot inkstick
Hi all , I’m looking for a VERY DARK black pine soot or matte finish inkstick, can anyone recommend one ?
I have previously used the Ancient Recipe Yellow Mountain pine soot inkstick and found that it had a nice luster but was not quite dark enough for my liking.
Thanks
Sam

How many inkstones for painting?
This is probably a silly question, but how many inkstones to I need for painting? If I just have one, if I want to use a different colour I have to clean the inkstones and brushes. If again I want to use a new colour I have to wash again. Do you use more than one when you paint a coloured painting to stop all this washing?

high quality thin xuan paper in fact is more expensive because this thinness requires better raw materials to ensure the paper strength and highly skilled craftsmanship. 🙂
The same applies to thick (double/ triple layer) xuan paper. In this case, only skilled craftsmen could do the job. #BambooPaper #XuanPaper

Hi AskiaLua,
This is made with babmoo fibres. It was marked as ‘Sheng Xuan’ but it is not traditional ‘Xuan Paper’ since it uses different fibres. It is made in Sichuan province while the authentic xuan paper can only be made in AnHui province. According to the price, I suspect it is machine-made since this cannot cover labour cost for making this amount of paper, not to mention fine raw materials.
However, if the price is 17 € including international shipping for 100 sheets of 50 * 100cm. It is very good value. You could give it a try. If you like using it, you can continuing sourcing this. Authentic sheng xuan sometimes are not as friendly as industrial papers.
I hope this is helpful. For more information about ‘Xuan Paper’, please refer to our article about the craftsmanship and raw materials:
best wishes,

Hi, could anyone share info on how / who from I could order custom-made wooden boxes to specification? For storing an heirloom Chinese inkstone safely when not in use. Am looking for an artisan-craftsman-carpenter who can help make one (or two) boxes from Paulownia, Mahogany or Rosewood. Thank you!

Chinese Paper Identification
I bought this paper for practice on eBay last year and would like to know what it is.
Could someone please translate the label for me?
I had bought this 100 pack of 100×50 cm for about 17 € including shipping, I can remember that it was on offer. My experience with it, its suitable for practising, strokes of different moisture can be easily drawn on it, it is not as absorbed as other unsized papers.
It’s probably a Xuan paper, I think.
At the beginning I was afraid to get very thin paper from eBay, it would have to be saved on the material in order to be able to offer things cheaply. I then researched on Chinese paper on eBay on the internet whether people have experience with it and then decided after several reviews on Instagram to give it a try.

Reply To: Pigments
I have already seen people simply dissolve these colour chips in room temperature without grinding them, it only takes a little longer.
I have to dissolve my home made paints with warm water so that I can use them, which is totally impractical when there is no kettle nearby. I suspect that the colour chips and the colors in the porcelain bowls have a different binder than rabbit skin glue because they are so easy to dissolve. Put an ink stick in water at room temperature and it dissolves very little ink, so it has to be grounded to get a lot of ink, which is more gentle than pouring very warm water over it, which would be way too much ink to work with if I could use it to dissolve an entire ink stick.
I read that the chips are often given as a binder resin and that comes from plants. Which one is used for colour chips?
I found a video on YouTube where peach sap glue has been added to the ink so that it runs less on the paper and stays moist longer on the palette. Peach sap glue is also a resin and resins are added to paints as binders.
Gum Arabic would run too much and is not suitable for Xuan paper while peach resin even has the property that the colour runs less and is more suitable.
As for the Maries colors I have them in a blue box with 18 colors in 9ml tubes, and they are very intense, they were the only ones that were available at Amazon at the time, I should have bought all three packs. #NaturalPigments

Thanks for the answer, I haven’t looked in here for a long time.
I wanted to know if the description oil and pine soot was correct, because they are often exchanged and somehow all ink sticks that are available in Germany are often described as Pine soot even though they are different varieties.
Here I have the impression that only industrial soot is student grade and everything that has other soot types is at least professional grade. So student grade pine and oil soot ink exists. I just thought it was interesting, I didn’t buy it, I wanted to wait and see.
I have a small cheap industrial soot ink stick for on the go-to practice in my sketchbook. but I didn’t notice a real difference to the others only that the ink is not as cool as from my pine soot ink stick #Inkstick
