Last year my Husband and I spent three weeks on a custom trip to China. We went to places the usual tourist groups don’t go and I studied painting with several artists. We planned our trip through “Wild China” who specializes in custom tours. https://www.wildchina.com/ #CalligraphyTripBruges #FieldTripChina #MaterialTrip

Field trip to China?

I just found this site, and I’m really happy about it! Amazing.

Specially after seeing the articles of brush making and inkstones and so forward have made me think that it would be really interesting to make some sort of study/field trip to China and actually see these things I read about.

I wonder if anyone else would share this interest to do some sort of study trip?

To see art in museums, galleries, see the places and people who make the equipment we can use for creating art, meet people who are in this field and maybe even paint something in the “real environment”. Would also be great to get some lessons from teachers/artists about painting and the philosophy behind Chinese art.

Before finding this site I tried to see if anyplace would offer some sort of workshops or other short courses to Chinese brush painting but most were either 1h things for tourists to try brush painting/calligraphy ( not that satisfying in my opinion as I have done this for some years already ), or really long courses that take months. Unfortunately, at least I can only do like two week holiday. But maybe with the help of this community I could either find travel companions for this or get hints on where to visit and who to contact in order to create holiday like this.

This is the result of my irritance with Maries Paints.
Sick of the ruin and money waste of Maries inability to sell non-exploding paint tubes I have decided the extra expense of Sakura is worth it. Tricky to come by but I think inkston.com sell them also, you pay a little extra but hopefully inkston.com can find some 12 tube boxes.
ALSO with the 24 tube set you get one tube of GOLD PAINT. Which is Gold Leaf and sparkles like diamonds in all colours including your black ink.

The reason I have changed is because I got tired of the lacking quality of packaging from Maries.

IF YOU ARE NEW to the Chinese Arts IF you are ok with the cost increase I would recommend Sakura paints. They are mineral which means they are NOT dyes so by majority of use they mix perfectly with the soot carbon granules of Chinese Soot Ink but moreover they do NOT seperate from the ink when the water pulls it through the fibres of the paper. It will “tide” exactly like the ink does.
The benefit of this is that the soot does NOT get left behind while the water pulls the colour through the paper fibres leaving a pale colour stain all the way to the edge of the water “tide”. Which happens with Western paints.

Another reason why traditionalistically I ONLY use Chinese materials for my Chinese Art because the Chinese were creating these materials thousands of years before the west and they know how it’s done.

My oppinion of Sakura paints in use?
The colours are incredibly opaque. What this means is that you use less paint. Because it has incredible covering power.
Also the radiance of the subtle pastels colours is beautiful. Its a real joy to mix and watch the reuslts in the bowl and then see it on the paper.
The “light-fastness” of the paints is reported to be about 98% fast across the spectrum. Which you would expect with mineral based colours.

And for those intrigued with my Foo Dog seal case….. here he is dissected. 🙂
I have not put any seal paste in the bowl yet as I have not cut the stones.
This is another reason getting out into China is worth it because you just see so many things that are NOT on the market to the West.
Foo Dog Seal Stone case.
I hope this post was useful to someone who takes the Chinese Arts as seriously as we do.
Best wishes…
Neil Armstrong.

Sometimes it is easier to use a cheap “Porcelain inkstone”, not really an ink stone but I am told they were used. Had this one been used for ink it most certainly would NOT have been rendered this white. 🙂
Using the rough porcelain surface makes the coloured particles a lot faster than a normal ink stone would but more than this they are particularly easy to clean.
If anyone wants a set of 12 coloured ink sticks, I have had a set for almost 15 years that I do not use. They are well aged and would be great for making all the colours you require if this is what you wish to do to Paint Chinese style.
Send me the shipping and you can have them for free.

Hi Askialuna, thanks a lot for your nice posts here! There has some interesting discussions on our forum about your post:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/inkston/

Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng I was thinking….. I am in the process of creating a beautiful video explaining why I have transitioned from Maries newer and disgustingly packaged bursting watercolor paint tubes to Sakura’s Watercolor who not only have a far superior pastel colour hue and texture initial but are more radiant and “go further” because of the opacity of the pigment.
As a result, is it possible to use a pestle and mortar to re-hydrate shrivelled maries watercolour pigments.
I spent several hundred pounds when I was in China on maries paints , now, only to find that they have bloated, burst and otherwise dried up.
To say that I’m p*ss*d off is an understatement.
But if the pestle and mortar is an option, if I can be bothered enough, I might give it a try when I am in a tight corner for colour… by re-grinding the paint pigment which in all cases is as hard as a rock. .

Inkston Angie Behrmann we are friend of the Tianya’s boss. They are a nice couple and both are famous artists in China. 🙂

Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng Maria Norma Herrera Papp Have you ever tried Sakura? They’re a little on the expensive side but the density of the pigment is little short of astounding. The packing is pristine and the tubes are “open” when you take off the lids.
Their pastel selection is unusual and has “heavy” colours. I really like them and wish I’d found them before.

If I find a solution Ill let you know to the Maries issue.

I think in trying to conform to Western issues of handling lead all your life (and dying young) they haven’t put in enough thought or understanding of the process of migration to newer packaging. Its failing badly.

Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng Angie Behrmann Ill look into this.

Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng Inkston So this paint is a powder? Like poster paint?

Inkston Angie Behrmann yes, they are artists and this is not Japanese or sino-Japanese brand. It is 100% Chinese. Their professional grade pigments are not cheap at all.

Inkston Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng yes, it is powder. Since it is difficult to ship powder internationally, we still have not found a good way to distribute them. Jiang SiXu Tang is a good option in this case and the quality is very good.

Shǒu Bì Qiáng Zhuàng Do Yasutomo provide Tubes of paint. I cannot use the little hard bowls of colour. Chinese art doesnt cater for it. I need it thick sometimes and watery others but primarily I need to mixa nd work the shade using several creamy paints from the tubes.
I find that the small dishes get so coloured and messy I cannot see where I was.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>And here is the stone after soaking in VERY mild soap water warm overnight and covering the stone with a wet sodden cloth.
As you can see there will always be ink in these old stones. The more they age the more particles loosen and fall into the ink and so “pitting” occurs. It is stone. It is the nature of it.
I love this stone. It has pitted areas in the lower 5th.
These rough parts release earth every single time I use this stone. That earth that frees must be under incredible pressure from when the rock was molten lava millions of years ago and every time I use this stone 600,000,000 (six hundred million) year old earth particles go into my calligraphy and paintings. Every time it dries this earth oozes out, just a rough area but since I’ve used this stone in 2006 it has done this.
I would never sell it. I almost did but……… sometimes your soul becomes a part of these treasures.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Also do you really want a stone that looks as though it just came out of the carvers studio? Age gives it the wisdom of your learning and in this the lessons of your learning will be apparent.

<p style=”text-align: center;”>
CLEANING THE DRAGON.
Cleaning the Dragon.

As you see, the ink is a permanent fixture of this stone. It is the way of things. Soot is raw carbon. The root of everything on Earth.
#HowToCleanInkstone

I am so appreciative of RaggedyBird’s comments. My inkstone definitely has some small areas that simply won’t clean, even with water immersion and light rubbing. I suspect the bulk of the staining has come from using the stone to hold some bottled YiDeGe ink that I love using in addition to the ground ink since it saves practice time.

Thinking about the nature of inksticks and how grinding works, it all makes sense. Thank you. #HowToCleanInkstone

^ These are some excellent points. Even contact with the ink stick slowly abrades the stone, which is why you see old inkstones with a depression in the middle. A good inkstone will keep its edge for a long time, and you should really not clean it with an abrasive unless it’s in dire need of being resurfaced (such as damaged, waxed or – rarely – worn smooth). #HowToCleanInkstone

“The inkstones we use are round and its sometimes really difficult to get the ink out of the corners”
HA ha !!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, if it was not that I knew what you meant this sounded very funny.

So, cleaning ink stones. I have one that is over 170 years old. It is a dragon moonstone inkstone. It was given to me by a very old Calligrapher in China I spent some time talking with in 2016. By the very nature of the stone spots it holds ink.
Do not worry about it. If a simple washing up kitchen brush, soft plastic doesnt move the ink under running water dont worry.
EVEN IF the base bowl of the ink stone is covered in soot, soot will scour soot. Soot will make soot ink. Carbon is sharp.
Dont worry too much.
NONE of my inkstones have FLAT BASES.
So a cleaning stone is no good. And if you are wearing down the top layer of your inkstone you are killing it slowly.
Making it thinner and thinner.
BE WARNED – BE CAREFUL WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
Even if the bowl of the inkstone is starting to go black do not worry. Irt will still age well and the making of fresh ink sill always slowly sand down the surface moving the old ink soot.
It is the nature of ABRASION.
Be intelligent about this.
You WILL kill your stone otherwise.
Be careful.

OVERNIGHT SOAKING.
The inkstone below is a beautiful carved Moonstone Dragon Inknstone.
I have soaked this overnight and later Ill include the results of simply soaking an inkstone and using a soft sponge to clean off the “expanded” gluey ink.

Soaking indeed can help the old ink come off, and at any rate will not do any harm. I use a piece of loofah sponge for daily cleaning. It’s coarse enough to scrub off leftover ink, yet does not hurt the stone.

I also have the mud block from Inkston. The quality is all right, I haven’t met with any nasty surprises (coarse sand). I find that it can be used to “reopen” the surface of the stone when it has lost its cutting ability, but normally you don’t want to do this all the time. By the way, I don’t exactly see why you could not use it on a round stone – you can always make a paste of the mud with water and polish with it.

If the stone is scratched or otherwise damaged, you can polish the surface using sandpaper, gauge depending on type of stone and desired result. The problem with sandpaper is that it wears the soft and hard parts of the stone equally, leaving a smooth surface with no cutting ability whatsoever. Grinding again with the mud block can help. However scary it sounds, you can even try an abrasive kitchen cleaner that contains milled calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is 3 on the Mohs scale, which will leave intact the hard components of the inkstone. The kind used in kitchen products can be a little coarse, though.

Some new inkstones, usually low or mid-range ones, are sold waxed or just plain unfinished, in which case they too will benefit from sandpaper treatment. #HowToCleanInkstone

Unfortunately, I came so late to make some colors and it is easier than I thought. 🙂

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOQOigwRZR8

I went after this instruction.

I have resolved too much gelatin, because it may be too fluid for me.
No problem I used less glue and added some water.

I do not know why, but my colors glitter a bit. ???
I used pure pigments from Kremer.

Yellow ocher light, golden ocher, green earth and Venetian red I made.

The gold ocher was too orange for me, then I made yellow ocher color.
Is it really normal, if I want to use the color again, that I have to warm up the color briefly?

So I can use it, otherwise dissolves very little color. #NaturalPigments

Reply To: Inkston initial brush #4 vs Inkston 0903WsWl Combination brush

Hello assortedlives,

Like Yan explained the brushes are similar but from a different grade. As a beginner you might want to not spend too much money on a brush but still have a decent brush – that’s the Initial #4.
When you are on a level where you want to invest in a good brush, the 0903WsWl brush is a good one.

Compare it with like buying a t-shirt. You need a new tshirt but you decide if you want a good one for a okay price or you want a good (to better one) for a more expensive price. It’s still just a tshirt only the materials and work put into it can differ.

Hope this helped you, if not please let me know 🙂 #ChinesePaintingBrush #CombinationBrush #WhiteCloudBrush

Reply To: Inkston initial brush #4 vs Inkston 0903WsWl Combination brush

For the difference between 0903WsWl and Initial brush #4, the hairs belong to the same type but different grade. The 0903WsWl has much higher than than the initial brushes. The 0903WsWl is designed to suit for all levels, including levels from beginners to professionals. The initial brushes are designed specifically for beginners. The hair grade of initial brushes is lower and therefore the price is very affordable. 🙂

I hope this answer is helpful! If you still cannot decide and need assistance, please kindly let me know your level and type of painting/ calligraphy you mostly do. #ChinesePaintingBrush #CombinationBrush #WhiteCloudBrush
