Reply To: What did you paint today?

Ah, how nice! I think this is the Inkston Double Layer Xuan paper. Inkston double layer paper is much thicker than normal double layer Xuan papers. It is nice to see this humid weather in the painting.  And I found that your signature seems to be very consistent in your paintings. Is that seal with black seal paste?

Reply To: Brush for the beak and eye of a bird

Hi riejkecares,

For me, I use mostly weasel hair brush to do the beak and  eye because this type of hair is stiff and can easily create the texture feeling of the beak and eyes.

As for the size of the brush, I sometimes use the Inkston gongbi brush which is made with weasel hair. Sometimes, I just use the standard weasel brush which is used also for small regular script calligraphy.

Reply To: Preparation of palm fibre brush

Hi Amr,

We consulted some mounting masters and their suggestion is that you can boil the entire brush. However, I also heard that some people feel the brush would get a bit too soft after being boiled. Some people like it soft while some people prefer it a bit harder. It is a bit personal. There is no strict timing on the boiling process. Maybe you can check it frequently while boiling it?

And, the palm brush might have too much ‘dust’ *small bits of fibers. Normally the higher grade, the less small fibers would fall out. The small ‘dust’ can be very annoying when you use it to mount. Therefore, if you feel there seems to be endless small fibers falling out even after you have boiled the brush, you can use the brush for other purposes for a while. Other purposes can include use the brush to clean table, carpet, etc. Because this will help ‘polish’ the brush in a natural way. In the end, the brush will become ‘cooperative’. 🙂 Again, this can be different from people to people.

We would recommend you to apply different extra steps when you feel necessary. If you take very good care of the brush, a high quality brush can endure for 10 years or even more. The longer the better it can become.

Hi Yan,

Thank you so much for the answer. One clarification, do you boil the entire brush including the grip, or do you boil only the bristle part, or do you boil only the tip that touches the paper?

Thanks!

Reply To: How to clean my seal?

For natural stone seal, it is not very recommended to use chemicals to clean it because the chemicals might harm the stone surface. There is a very popular way in China to clean the seal. I use kneadable eraser. This can help clean the small details on the carving. I think this way is quite good.

Reply To: Color background

Yes exactly…   and there are some papers of different hues such as the walnut aged appearance:

http://ift.tt/2y4g79i

and the decorated papers: http://ift.tt/2jWz6w4 which are also quite traditional –  that is to make use of a coloured background, not necessarily that background detail should be painted.

I also like the pictures where the background is entirely implied:  http://ift.tt/2y4fU60 or suggested with a stroke:

Other times, other styles a background is needed and that can be great too…

Reply To: Inkston Login Questions

Oh I see what you mean – lovely picture but a bit too big for my screen too.

To get the best result:

  1. Move the mouse to one of the corners of the picture, the mouse pointer should change to a resize arrow, here you can click and resize
  2. Add a link to zoom the image:
    1. right-click on the picture to get the address of the picture (for example open in a new window and copy the address)
    2. select the picture and add a link  (Insert, Insert/Edit link from the menu or click on the link button), when the dialog appears, enter the address for the picture.

I’ve just done this on this picture:  http://ift.tt/2fmkvoy and now it fits on the screen and it is also possible to zoom right in.

However it might also be just a good and simpler solution to make the picture smaller before uploading.

Reply To: Color background

The peculiarity is this…
Traditionally Chinese Paintings did NOT have a coloured background. Rather the hue of paper would allow some degree of mood swing on content painted.
The westerner always paints in the details of what was in the background of the painting, a church, some trees, a blue sky and some clouds but the traditionalist doesn’t add these elements
Some of the beauty of real traditional Chinese art is that it isolates the subject without a background no matter what the background.

Otherwise the question is a complicated one.
To colour the background depends on the type, thickness, age, resistance to water, fibre type and size of the paper used and then the colour required, its paint substance, the viscosity, the acidity of the water, the density of the mixture and on and on and on.

In art there is no recipe that’s universal.
You experiment as we all do.
And even then, this week it looks one way next week another because weather changes, humidity changes, speed of drying, and so on.

The PERFECT way? you nee an airbrush and paint solution that will work through it. This way the mist is so fine it will discolour the paper without droplets and without tide-line.

Be confident. Anything goes. This is art. Not cake baking. 🙂

Reply To: Preparation of palm fibre brush

Please you can boil it for a couple of minutes or you simply soak the new brush in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. It would also be recommended to add a bit salt in the water. The salt can help protect the brush by avoiding fungus.

Wow, beautiful! I love the villages very much!

I have tried 0809 raw Xuan paper too but I always feel it is a bit absorbent. How did you manage to paint such nice details of the dragon? Did you use alum and resin to lay the colors?

Preparation of palm fibre brush

Hi everyone. I just received some palm fibre brushes for mounting, and the instructions said to boil and sand before use. I was aware that the tip should be sanded with sand paper to make sure it is smooth before touching the paper, but I didn’t know about the boiling.

Do you boil the whole brush or just the tip? How long should it be boiled? Should it be boiled with plain water or alum water?

I would appreciate any help on this subject.

Thanks!
